Mad Men Recap: Season 7, Episode 1: The Beginning of the End

Mad Men Recap
Season7, Episode 1
**SPOILER ALERT

For me personally Mad Men is one of my absolute favorite shows of all time. I will also give that honor to Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and Seinfeld. Every episode is exceptionally written and almost reads like a book. The stories told are deeper than what they appear on the surface and in a sense give us an insight into a life that would resonate with perhaps our grandfathers. The story is realistic and captures the essence of the era it portrays so well.

Similar to how the ending of Breaking Bad was presented; the final season for Mad Men will take 2 years to commence. This season we will only be given 7 episodes and next year it will all be said and done. Are you ready for the beginning of the end? Make yourself a Martini and relax into some good ol’ fashioned fun.

This week’s episode, “Time Zones,” brings us right where we left off, the office is running as usual in New York, but this time we are also getting a glimpse into their new Los Angeles base. This is where all the ads with references to flying are coming in to play.

Don flies to LA to visit Megan and see the new offices and Pete. In Megan’s domain he is out of place and uncomfortable and finds solace in watching TV. Her TV is so small and he surprises her with a big giant, yes like the one my grandparents had in their living room. You could typically fit about 20 picture frames on those TVs. Megan is visibly upset about the gift, all Don wanted to do was buy her TV, but why does this upset her so? She doesn’t want to show fancy gifts, when she doesn’t even have a real job yet. Regardless they make the best of his trip and somewhat resolve their problems, but it is obvious something is going on much deeper and I doubt that Megan is truly happy with him.

He also goes to visit Pete, sideburns and all. They go to a diner he says is reminiscent of NYC and he orders a pastrami sandwich called the Brooklyn Ave. Don eats it and he is satisfied, at this point it seems like all he wants is a little of something to call home, to make him feel better and comforted, considering the SC&P agency has somewhat forgotten about him.

On his way to NYC, a widowed woman is seated next to him on the plane. She alludes to the fact that her husband died of alcoholism and that the doctor said he would die in a year.

This really gets Dons wheels turning, could that be him soon? Hello did anyone notice Neve Campbell?! Dying! I so wanted them to hook up, but unfortunately Don brushed her off and kept his dignity in his pants for once. Boy is he really trying to be a good husband, but I honestly doubt this will last long.

Back in NYC, Ted has gone to the office to visit and Peggy is still upset about what he did last season. He had his way with her, made her fall in love with him, but ultimately chose his family over her. When they are together on screen the tension is thick and she tries to ignore him at one point by loudly calling out to her office mates about brewing coffee. Awkwardness, ouch!

Freddy Rumsen is now working as a freelancer and pitches his ideas about Accutron to Peggy. We find out that Don is actually feeding him these ideas. Gasp, we knew Freddy wasn’t that good!

Peggy’s new boss is now Lou Avery, an old grumpy man, who really doesn’t give a crap about Peggy and her ideas. She tries to bring up the Accutron pitch and he keeps rejecting her ideas.

Roger Sterling is still up to his old ways, but this time worse. Having orgies and late night parties like a young kid. Why is he not at work? Also, his daughter meets with him to tell her she forgives him for all his transgressions. Something is going on with her, could it be a cult of some type?

We are back to seeing Joan in her role as the Office Manager, but again she has that itch like she did with Avon to be an account executive. She takes one of Ken Cosgrove’s clients, Butler Shoes, and tries to turn them around into wanting to stay with the agency. She gets some information from a college professor friend, where we see that not only is she a pretty face, but she knows a lot about the industry she has been so deeply embedded with, she is no longer just a sexual object anymore.

untitled;l;'l'  tumblr_n417ejX5bd1rkp9ijo6_250 (HELL yeah!)

I love that this is in the series, we see that women at this time, most likely did not have as much confidence to enter the workforce to be anything other than a secretary, and she embodies that spirit of the woman’s movement and the progression that is women in the workforce. She lacks confidence, but I think we will soon hopefully see her rise above the constraints she has placed on herself all these years.

tumblr_n41w1vEpEL1sq9xy6o9_r1_250 (Maybe Joan is the new Don. Whiskey anyone?)

The show closes with Don deciding not to pick up the bottle. He almost has a moment where he says screw it all, but he decides not to do it. The sliding door to his balcony is broken and he sits outside cold and shivering. Could it mean that his time has come, has his door closed and now new ones will open for others or does it just mean he is a broken man, with nothing left, not even a drink to comfort him in the cold. Instead he is left alone to the face the reality that is his life, a shell of a man who was once at the top of the ladder, is now so far down he must sit with the cold night air alone in the dark.

  1. “Now who else is this sexy on TV, I dare you to try!”

    No one ever votes for me……………………. 😦 😦 😦 😦

  2. Wish I had time to watch more TV, but Jon Hamm is such a ham, ahah. Just saw him at some old dating show, boy he certainly gets better with age!

    • It’s not fair right?! Men get hotter as they get older. I think you would love this show, prob more than Game of Thrones since this has zero violence. Sigh… yes he is so hot, I couldn’t help myself!

  3. I. Love. Mad Men! It seems that every season catches me off guard and this year is no different! Really enjoyed the first episode, found myself saying, “that’s so Mad Men” quite often ;). Always forget how awesome the show is. Can’t wait for the rest of this season!

    • Thanks Anna! Glad to find some more Mad Men fans on here. Jon Hamm eating ham, burgers, pastrami sandwiches, orange crush soda, anything and everything he does is hot! lol Agree I hope Joan shows them who’s boss. 🙂

  4. Checking in as one of the Mad Men fans. This was a great summary. Watching the show is so emotionally and sensually immersive that I often come away with no real awareness of what just happened, of how the plot was advanced. This was useful, and a great primer for watching the next episode.

    • Thanks Renae! Glad to have another fan. Seriously the show really makes you think because so much is going on beneath the surface that is foreshadowing 9 times out of 10 what is going to happen in the future with the show. Thanks for reading!!

  5. Just seen the episode (at last I catch up with Mad Men). I found this episode quite good, nothing really happens but overall it’s satisfying to see what happens to the characters. Though, I am surprised to see Neve Campbell here. I like her and hope to see her again. Good write up!

PS: How do you managed to find all of those GIFs? lol
